The industry is obsessed with how seamlessly a user can prompt an AI, but completely ignores how the AI should talk back. In the high-stakes world of insurance compliance, a dense, text-heavy paragraph generated by an LLM is a liability, not a solution.
The mandate for Illumend went far beyond designing a sleek chat interface. It required architecting a bi-directional system—designing both an intuitive input method for the user and a highly structured visual digestion system for the AI's output.
After the initial concept sprint, Left Field Labs brought in AOW to architect the structural and visual solution: Illumend, an AI-driven LLM compliance assistant by MyCOI. Our mandate spanned the entire product ecosystem—UX, UI, content strategy, interaction design (IxD), and AI interaction logic.
To deliver an AI product that was legitimately helpful rather than just a novelty, we first had to deconstruct the granular mechanics of the compliance world. Here is how we translated a tangled regulatory web into a streamlined, task-driven utility.
Conversational Architecture: Utility vs. "Task Master"
Designing an LLM for a serious, highly regulated industry requires a highly disciplined content strategy. The immediate challenge was defining the persona and interaction model of Illumend.
We engineered a conversational architecture that positioned the AI as a legitimate utility, specifically avoiding the trap of making it sound like an overbearing "task master." We structurally mapped exactly when the system needed to deploy rigid, task-driven language to mandate action, and when it should shift into a conversational, supportive tone to clarify complex requirements. This strategic content design ensured the tool felt approachable without sacrificing its authority on critical legal compliance.
Designing the Feedback Loop
Mapping the user journey meant mapping the AI’s brain. Static screens were insufficient; dynamic logic gates had to be designed. When a user asks a complex question about contractor liability, how does the AI decide whether to return a simple text confirmation, a comparative data table, or a risk-assessment chart?
Weeks were spent in the nitty-gritty of information architecture, defining the exact rulesets that dictate how Illumend parses raw compliance data and selects the optimal visual component to render it back to the user. This created the critical translation layer between the algorithm and the human eye.
Information Architecture & The "Lumie" Design System
Conversational AI is only half the equation; the resulting data still needs to be visually digested in seconds.
We recognized through our IA mapping that both agents and contractors needed the ability to rapidly scan compliance tiers and pinpoint errors. To support this, we built the Lumie Design System—a robust, scalable library tailored specifically for complex data visualization. We engineered a slew of high-density tables, charts, and metric cards designed strictly for scanability, turning massive amounts of raw compliance data into a clear visual hierarchy.
Deep Integration & Comprehensive Journey Mapping
An enterprise tool is only effective if it lives where the work actually happens. To be adopted, Illumend needed to function seamlessly within Procore, the primary construction management software used by the target demographic.
We executed a massive study of potential user journeys to support this cross-platform integration. We mapped and designed the entire lifecycle beyond the core chat interface, accounting for everything from initial account workspace creation down to the automated email delivery systems. Every edge case was accounted for, ensuring a frictionless operational loop between Procore and Illumend.
Calculated Aesthetics: An AI-Driven Identity
While the underlying systems were heavy, the top-level visual execution needed to signal intelligence, speed, and clarity.
Instead of a full, ground-up brand identity, we executed a deliberate visual evolution of the core MyCOI brand. We gave Illumend its own distinct identity through a simplified, highly structured aesthetic that felt intrinsically smart and AI-driven. The aesthetics were calculated strictly to support the product's advanced capabilities without distracting from the data.
